woot?

River Walk, San Antonio, TX

I went to a conference last week in San Antonio. The convention center was just a block away from the River Walk, which is the San Antonio River that wends through downtown in a beautiful environment of shops and restaurants. It's near the Alamo in old San Antonio. I spent much of my down time there wandering along the water. The weather was spring-like and balmy, so that most shucked their jackets and held their faces to the warm sunshine. One of my favorite places to sit was at a place called Hear Music which is also a Starbucks. It boasted a patio two stories above the walk, which afforded me a perfect view of a restaurant below, called DICKS.
Now, at DICKS, you have to be prepared to have a good time and appear ridiculous, or you might as well just move along. Luckily, the good time is usually at someone else's expense, since many who sit down are presented with and required to wear a giant condom made of paper. These are towering white constructions with a twisted end, that cause just about everyone passing to turn and look again. Laughing, snickering are common, because not only do you have to wear a giant paper condom on your head while you eat, but the condom hats have sayings written in heavy marker like "Beer Makes Me Poot!"
Now I ask you...what is that? Poot? Is this a new word? And similarly what about this other word
Woot?
I see the word Woot and immediately my new word Poot comes to mind. Are they related?
What if you get them mixed up?

Well...

Woot is from netspeak, or Leetspeak, a... well, it's popular among the teenagers, but is usually met with eyerolling and questions about the typer's (speaker's) level of inteligence. Unless it's done in an ironic fashion, in which case only the eyerolling applies... or the questioning... or both... on second thought, avoid leetspeak.

Now for "Poot."

From my personal recollection, "Poot" was another word for fart. However, the definition can vary by region and person, if Urbandictionary.com is any indication. I stopped on the first page of definition, as it's late and I don't want my dreams filled with pootings and tootings–my days are bad enough as it is ;)

Wait, I didn't define Woot! Sorry about that.

Retreating back to Urban Dictionary, I found the perfect definition (i.e. explains things I didn't know, and could be copy/pasted/tweaked):

1. woot
Woot originated as a hacker term for root (or administrative) access to a computer. However, with the term as coincides with the gamer term, "w00t".
"w00t" was originally an trunicated expression common among players of Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game for "Wow, loot!" Thus the term passed into the net-culture, where it thrived in video game communities (such as Online Multiplayer RPGS) and lost its original meaning, and is used simply as a term of excitement.
- "I defeated the dark sorcerer! Woot!"
- "woot! i r teh flagmastar!" (Think Tribes)
- "Woot, I pwnzed this dude's boxen!'

Note: the last two examples also featured netspeak. Just reading them gave me a headache, and they didn't even feature the "replacing letters with numbers" aspect, i.e. L3375P34K.

Just typing that made me feel dirty ;)

why thank you kind sure...I was uneasily guessing that poot was somthing of the sort from the context (BEER!) but for the life of me I've not heard anyone use it. (probably because men are the typical beer drinkers of nasty noxious brews like wheat beer and are not likely to use a term like POOT, heh heh)

As for woot, a much more esoteric term, and your response really illuminated it for me. Thanks ever so much. We have D&D games at our library twice a month, I see that I'll have to lurk myself and eavesdrop because there's plenty of hacking slashing and head crushing--I'm hopeful! (beaming)

I'd never heard of 'poot' until I read the word in Terry Pratchett's Maskerade where it's implied that it's a ladylike swearword (close to 'botheration')
